Unfortunatly, New Jersey is one of the few states whose laws regarding interest charges on judgments is as follows
MAXIMUM INTEREST RATE: Legal: 6% Judgment: None specified
You will have to pay what ever the amount is listed in the judgment.
But first check out to see if the judgment is legitimate. Did you contact the court to verify it, or just the collection agency. Many agencies will use false documents in order to collect debts.
Use this web site first to see if this collection agency is on the up and uphttp://www.budhibbs.com/drowning_in_debt...
Hope this answers your question

Do your research on credit on the internet. In most cases if you send a letter demanding that they prove the debt is yours they have to do it to make it legal. If they are in fact able to do this then negotiate with them. If you owe them 1,000. then perhaps send a legally certified letter and a check for the original amount. Say 700 dollars and write on the check that processing of this check constitutes payment in full and COMPLETE removal from credit records, if they want their money they will do it.

You must pay off the entire balance to remove this from your credit report. Anything less will be considered a partial payment and will either be returned to you (they often do not accept anything other than in full) or they will credit it to your account but the strike on your cr will remain until paid off.
Good luck
