when i tried it says that a network could not be established
but when i tried on my nintendo ds it said that the security settings were not compatible

Two possibilitys, Ill explain both of them.
First, if you have an ethernet cable that connects you to a modem & router, then you just take one of the ethernet cables (Not one that connects the two.) and plug it into the back ethernet port on your Ps3.
Now if you want to connect your nintendo DS, you have to go out and buy a $40.00 hook-up from bestbuy. What it is is just a small USB port stick that takes your internet and broadcasts it to the DS so it can access, really its just a system of flips and switches so nintendo can make more money.
Another thing, make sure to check your security settings on your windows firewall (If you use windows) and check your Ps3 settings making sure most everything is open and has full access.
bit more info needed – is it wireless or wired?
if wired. Just plug it into a router or network hub that has an internet connection established onto it – either via anotehr pc or a router on the network – Just plug it in it will sort the rest out
If wireless – just make sure that you give it the right wep key to access the internet connection – again it will sort all teh technical settings out
