I am trying to fill out an online job application. Should I give my social security number? For what reason would they need it?

Depens, if its just a hack application for them to get ur info then dont, if its a real application then why the hell not?
If you get the job, they do need it for your taxes. Also, a SSN is proof that you are a citizen and eligible for work. Some jobs will do a background or credit check and that is probably why they are asking for your SSN… however, I would not give it over the internet. Wait until you get a face-to-face interview… and even then I would be cautious.
