Where Does The Government Get It’s Intel Information?

I just read an article on yahoo news that says that North Korea tested nuclear weapons underground. But they haven’t come out and admitted it. My question is, where does the United States (or South Korea, Japan, England, etc.) get information regarding national security like this? I mean, it’s 2009. Spies that used to be able to go undercover years ago, and blend in with the enemies are clearly not how it’s done today. Technology is a possibility, however, how is information like that obtained? Emails? Tapped phone calls? Something like that? My question essentially is that obviously it wouldnt be difficult for the FBI to send someone undercover to work for the drug cartels in Mexico, it wouldn’t be hard to get someone into organized crime like the mafia, or to get someone into any crime ring for that matter. But to get someone on the inside of a Government operation? Seriously? I just don’t see that being remotely possible anymore - even in a poor, undeveloped country like North Korea. I mean, what do you do? Send a handful of SEALs to hang out at their research and development centers and wait for a guy to walk by, kidnap him, scare the crap out of him so he talks? Then what, kill the guy?? Obviously this is stuff that us as citizens will never know. But, it all just seems strange to me. I wanna know how the national security branches in today’s world is obtaining information like that. How much information on us does the Taliban have on us? How much does North Korea know about our operations, besides how we’ve already flexed our muscles in the past (Atomic bombs in Nagasaki, and Hiroshima)
