Why Can Citizens Not Vote On Important Government Issues Online.?

Why in this day and age of internet banking, can we not have an online voting system, with registered voters? We can do our taxes online, we can pay bill online, but we cannot vote online. I understand the security risks, but major issues can be voted on by the grass roots of the country, leaving politician with no option but to answer why or why not to the issue at hand.

  • Many Americans still do not have access to computers and/or to the Internet, while others do not know how to operate them. The elderly and the poor, particularly, would be unfairly excluded by such a system.
Internet voting in elections might make sense at some time in the future, as free Internet access is made available to all, and as more people become computer literate. Concerns about privacy and electoral fraud can probably be overcome if there is a determination to do so.
On the other hand, voting on specific issues by Internet will never be practical. Most issues are complex, and few voters are able to become well-enough informed to make intelligent decisions. Furthermore, most people have little interest in the many issues that face Congress and state legislatures, so we cannot realistically expect a legitimate cross-section of the population to vote on any given issue. Large, powerful organizations would be able to mobilize their supporters, while the average voter would likely not even be aware of specific votes.
Despite the many flaws in the current system, it still beats this proposal.

Because until they can 100 % guarantee that votes will not be tampered with or changed, then they will not do on line voting.

Yahoo will not allow a free and fair ellection.

that would lead to direct democracy. This only works in small village like settings. Aside from this also politicians would not permit this due to their loss of power. Last and most important it would be extremely complex to do. Imagine that the old lady down the block, has a computer crash and then sues the goverment due to her inability to cast her vote.

Good idea considering the way US Govt has been by-passing the issues. If the public could vote on border security it would have been done ages ago. Perhaps if you took out a petition & made copies for others to get signed I wonder what would happen.
