Why Can I Only Go Online With My Firewall Off?

I got an alert a few days ago about a blocked virus or something, now I can only go online with the firewall off and I keep getting security alerts telling me it’s off.

  Open Control Panel, then Security Center. then below click on Windows Firewall. Then try first at the exceptions tab> uncheck Internet Explorer. Then try on the Advanced tab, then on the “Network Connections Settings” Check the Local Area Network. If it is not present, Click on settings and then click on Local Area Network then OK.
